Liberia’s election remains in impasse

Monrovia, 27 Nov. 2017 – The vagueness looming over the second round of elections in Liberia continues to gain more significance as the Liberty Party of Charles Brumskine and the Unity Party of Joseph Boakai refuse to adhere to the numeral calls made by the population as well as by the international community.

On Friday the board of the National Elections Commission denied an appeal by the two party to have a re-run of elections. The accusations made by both parties could not be substanciated.

“A transposing error which was corrected and did not impact any candidate vote does not constitute fraud. Therefore, the request by the complaining parties for a re-run of elections is hereby denied.” Davidetta Lassana, member of the board of commissioners.

For the board of commissioners, the parties have continued to accuse the NEC but none have been able to show evidence. “A witness indicated that there were no series numbers on the ballot papers distributed throughout the country. Evidence shows that indeed series numbers existed on said papers. Another witness said that the FRR (final registration roll) was not given to the parties. Evidence provided by the NEC shows the contrary. It was also alleged that more than thousand voted were given to the CDC in a polling center. The NEC record shows that the CDC did not more than 115 votes in said polling center. The constitution says that accusation should be proved by indubitable evidence. The board hereby sustains decision earlier made by the hearing officer of the National Election Commission.”

After being completely rejected by the NEC board, the two parties have resolved to go to the Supreme Court. “We will make an appeal to the Supreme Court.” Varnie Sherman, lawyer of Unity party, told journalists when he was asked if he will finally allow elections to go on.
